Moving Temporary Files Location

  1. In address bar, type about:config and press Enter
  2. In the main screen, accept the warning message by clicking on the button
  3. Click right button of the mouse while the cursor is in the blank part of the screen
    1. Select “New” from the pop-up menu
    2. Select “String” under “New” from the pop-up menu
  4. In the blank field of the pop-up message
    1. Type browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
    2. Press Enter or click OK
  5. In the blank field of the following pop-up message
    1. Type the path to the directory you want the temporary files to be stored
    2. Press Enter or click OK
  6. Locate the preference string called browser.cache.disk.enable from the list either by entering browser.cache.disk.enable in the blank search field on the top or by scrolling through the list
  7. Verify that the string’s value is set to true 
  8. If its value is set to false, then change the value to true 
    1. either by a double-click on the string
    2. or by clicking right button of the mouse and selecting “Toggle” from the menu
  9. Close the tab or restart Firefox

Moving Bookmark Files Location

Firefox (up to version 3.x)

  1. In address bar, type about:config and press Enter
  2. In the main screen, accept the warning message by clicking on the button
  3. Click right button of the mouse while the cursor is in the blank part of the screen
    1. Select “New” from the pop-up menu
    2. Select “String” under “New” from the pop-up menu
  4. In the blank field of the pop-up message
    1. Type browser.bookmarks.file
    2. Press Enter or click OK
  5. In the blank field of the following pop-up message
    1. Type the path to the bookmarks file you want the temporary files to be stored
    2. Press Enter or click OK
  6. Close the tab or restart Firefox

Firefox (version 4.x and beyond)

  •  Starting FF version 4.0, bookmarks file (bookmarks.html) has been replaced by a profile file (places.sqlite) that saves combination of bookmarks, bookmark icons, history, annotations, etc.  Therefore, the entire profile folder has to be moved to a new location in order to move the bookmarks folder for Firefox.
  1. Close Firefix program
  2. Locating the profile folder for Firefox
    1. Start “Run” application by pressing Windows key and R key together (Windows + R)
    2. Type the command for opening application data folder for the current user: %appdata%
    3. When the application data folder window has opened
      1. Open Mozilla folder
      2. then open Firefox folder
  3. Move the profile folder
    1. In the Firefox folder window, select Profiles folder
    2. Press Ctrl key and X key together (Ctrl + X) to mark the folder for moving
    3. Go to the new folder where the Firefox profile must be moved to
    4. Press Ctrl key and V key together (Ctrl + V) to move the folder to the new location
  4. Edit the profile initialization file (profile.ini) for Firefox
    1. In the folder where the profile folder was originally located, there is a “profile.ini” file
    2. Double-click on the file (or Right-Click then select Edit from pop-up menu)
    3. When the file content is open in Notepad application, edit the file to address the profile
      1. Change “IsRelative=1” to “IsRelative=0”
      2. Type the directory path next to the “Path=” command (i.e. Path=D:\Firefox\data)
      3. Save the file by pressing Ctrl key and S key together (Ctrl + S)
      4. Close the file by pressing Alt key and F4 key together (Alt + F4)
  5. Start Firefox to verify all steps are completed correctly
